It’s time, once again, for the clash of the Titans, the big competition — puppies or kittens?
Oh, and I guess there’s also some football game going on tonight, too.
Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl XIV runs against Hallmark’s Kitten Bowl V today, giving hours and hours of counter-programming for people who don’t care about sports or just want some cute distractions on their screen before kickoff.
Animal Planet is going all-out, with special programming including a “where are they now?” retrospective about previous puppies (10 a.m.), a “training camp confidential” (1 p.m.), “Puptriots vs. the B-eagles.” (3) and the big match, “Ruff Vs. Fluff” (6:10). There’s also a Puppy Bowl Virtual Reality experience .
Kitten Bowl will begin at noon on Hallmark, and will be repeated at 3. Like Puppy Bowl, it is a mix of cute hijinks and a good message, emphasizing the importance of animal adoption and finding “fur-ever” homes for the pets. The 2018 Kitten Bowl will feature kittens rescued in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma and other natural disasters. Hosts will include Dean Cain, Rodney and Holly Robinson Peete, and Boomer Esiason.

For a decidedly less cuddly counterprogramming option, AMC will have a marathon of “The Walking Dead” starting at 3 p.m. ESPN, meanwhile, will air a “World Series of Poker” marathon; A&E has a marathon of “Storage Wars”; BBC America, “Star Trek: The Next Generation” (um, because the French captain has a British accent, I suppose); BET, “Martin”; HLN, “Forensics Files”; TLC, “Say Yes to the Dress”; and so on.

And for people who use the CBS All Access digital streaming service, “Star Trek: Discovery,” at 8:30 p.m., is shifting gears after a compelling storyline that took the crew to a mirror universe with evil versions of themselves, a “Star Trek” staple dating back to 1967. The crew made it back to our universe at the end of last week’s episode, but discovered they were off by nine months, and had landed at a time when the Federation has apparently lost its war with the Klingons. There are only two more episodes in this season of “Discovery,” so it’s not clear how far into this storyline we’ll get before a likely cliffhanger until season two (which has already been ordered).

The big event of the night for many non-sports fans will likely be “This Is Us,” airing after the Super Bowl on NBC. This appears to be the big one, folks, the episode that tells us what happened to Jack, the family patriarch who is alive in flashbacks but not in modern day, for reasons that have been left vague over the show’s run to date. Clues have been set up on the show for weeks now, with a house fire involving a slow cooker — which, in real life, compelled the makers of the Crock-Pot to issue a press release emphasizing the safety of their product. Knowing that the big game may run over, NBC is encouraging viewers to set their DVRs for extra time to make sure they don’t miss the episode.
